How to create perfect and rich vocal harmony like a pro

Harmony is something where multiple vocals with different scales are layered together. You can listen rich vocal harmony in song "Tu Jaane Na" from Bollywood movie Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani at starting part. Now you can layer two or even ten vocals together and that totally depends upon your requirement. For creating harmony you don't necessarily need more people. You can layer your own vocals multiple times. But to make it perfect, do the following : 1. Record your vocal multiple times with different scale Some people use plugins such as Vox Doubler or even Chorus. I am not saying that they aren't good. But they can't give the output which you actually want and neither any pro engineer uses these plugins to create harmony. 2. Scales on which you need to record Now if you are going to record simple harmony of two layers then you can first record it in original scale. And then you can record same melody by going down -2 semi notes but in same scale. So y...

Are you worried about copyright while uploading cover songs in YouTube ?

Well you don't need to worry about that. Few years ago, Music companies used to launch their Songs/Albums just through Cassette, CD/DVD, etc. And as soon as internet took over and YouTube became the powerful medium of sharing Songs/Videos worldwide, Music companies also changed their way of selling/promoting their products. Now they also upload their songs on their Official YouTube channel and monetize it. By monetizing the song, they will be paid by YouTube based on their ads impression(per click). On the other side we can also see that Cover Versions are also trending on YouTube. What is Cover Version ? Re-created version of Original Song is called as Cover Version. Any individual can re-create the song in his own voice or music.  So does that mean we can upload our Cover Version on YouTube ? Yes. But as you are re-creating the original version and Music companies protect their songs by copyrighting them which refrains anyone to use it and make money out of it without t...

How to make a cover song - Part 2 - Setting Up Lights, Camera, Video Shooting & Editing

In my previous post you saw the process of making a track. Now I will show you how to shoot & edit video for your cover song. As you all are aware that presentation matters a lot. You cannot just sit back relax after making a song and assume that your task is done. You have to shoot a proper video for your cover song to get the attention you need. Earlier even I used to put slideshow on my cover songs with my random photos. This is not good. Then one of my friend suggested me to buy a DSLR and start shooting HD Video. So let me break down whole process into three steps again: 1) Setting up Camera, Lights & Background 2) Shooting Video 3) Video Editing 1) Setting up Camera, Lights & Background For recording HD Video I purchased Nikon D5200 DSLR. It cost around 27000 INR at that time. Its a pretty decent camera and fulfill all my needs. You really don't have to purchase an expensive DSLR . This one can also serve your purpose. Then I felt that Kit lens woul...

How to make a cover song ?

Hey everyone :) Its been so long that i have wrote any new article. So here it is... After seeing my cover songs, some viewers asked me what equipment's I use for recording a song. So I've made a short video in which I am explaining the whole process involved from start to end in brief. 1. First part is Designing / Programming a track. 2. For that I use my CASIO CTK-3000 Synthesizer and a Digital Audio Workstation(Primarily Cubase) or you can say DAW. 3. In simple words, DAW is the software used to create a music track. 4. You can create melody patterns, chord progression, beats and many other things using a DAW. 4. In music industry, First the track is prepared, then singer records over it and finally Mixing & Mastering engineer do their jobs. 5. So you can summarize whole process into these three steps :    a) Track Programming    b) Vocals Recording    c) Mixing & Mastering Track Programming 1) I use my Casio synth just for MID...

Recording Vocals : Do's & Don'ts

I have seen lots of people asking questions about how to properly record the vocals so that it sound like pro. So in this post, I will tell you how to do it. Firstly don't use headphone's mic(its obvious but lots of people do it ). There are some budget-friendly microphones out there in market and some of them comes with kit which has Mic stand, Shock-wave mount, etc. Check this article : http://www.wirerealm.com/guides/top-10-best-microphones-recording-vocals I am currently using Blue Yeti Usb Microphone and its decent. Now that you have a good mic, you can start recording. Follow below tips while recording : 1) Always use pop-filter to avoid sudden peak in recording due to some sounds like 'ph', 'bh'. 2) Adjust the volume of your microphone such that your recording software don't cuts off the signal when you sing too loud and it should also be not too low so that clarity vanishes. 3) Don't apply any effect on your audio-track in DAW while ...

What VSTi plugins we need while making music ?

Its totally up to a sound programmer. He can produce an awesome track even with built-in plugins or worst track using most popular plugins . But that doesn't mean we should avoid using Third Party Plugins. Some of the vst plugins out there are awesome because they are made out of pure dedication. So in this post i am going to share some of the decent plugins which i have used(using) : Instrument's VST: 1) Native Instrument's Kontakt Player : This is actually a sampler. And after installing it we have to download libraries for different sounds we want. Like for piano, Alicia Keys is great. For guitar, Pettin House is awesome. Like these, there are numerous other libraries as well. You can check them out on their official website.   i) Alicia Keys : Official Product demonstration        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_54ERfLElI   ii) Pettin House Guitar : Unofficial Product demonstration       https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Sidechaining Compression In Cubase

Probably most of you have heard pumping DJ beats with a bass-line where the amplitude of bass-line goes down when kick punches and then again goes up like a sinusoidal wave. This is mostly used in dance tracks. We call it side-chaining compression technique, where we compress the bass-line signal according to the jump in amplitude of kick drum. How to do it ? 1. Create a drum track(Groove Agent- any patch) and draw 4 kick notes in 4/4 grid (simple beat). 2. Create a bass track from any VST plugin and draw a single note spanning over all 4/4 grid for 16 notes. You can create a melody also but that should be continuous. 3. Add a normal cubase compressor to bass-line track and click on side-chaining icon to activate side-chaining. Use the same setting given below to achieve side-chaining. 4. Go to drum track and select side-chaining track under send signal. Now play the track and you could hear that pumping bass sound. So basically you are done with basic side-chai...
