Recording Vocals : Do's & Don'ts

I have seen lots of people asking questions about how to properly record the vocals so that it sound like pro. So in this post, I will tell you how to do it. Firstly don't use headphone's mic(its obvious but lots of people do it ). There are some budget-friendly microphones out there in market and some of them comes with kit which has Mic stand, Shock-wave mount, etc. Check this article : http://www.wirerealm.com/guides/top-10-best-microphones-recording-vocals I am currently using Blue Yeti Usb Microphone and its decent. Now that you have a good mic, you can start recording. Follow below tips while recording : 1) Always use pop-filter to avoid sudden peak in recording due to some sounds like 'ph', 'bh'. 2) Adjust the volume of your microphone such that your recording software don't cuts off the signal when you sing too loud and it should also be not too low so that clarity vanishes. 3) Don't apply any effect on your audio-track in DAW while ...

What VSTi plugins we need while making music ?

Its totally up to a sound programmer. He can produce an awesome track even with built-in plugins or worst track using most popular plugins . But that doesn't mean we should avoid using Third Party Plugins. Some of the vst plugins out there are awesome because they are made out of pure dedication. So in this post i am going to share some of the decent plugins which i have used(using) : Instrument's VST: 1) Native Instrument's Kontakt Player : This is actually a sampler. And after installing it we have to download libraries for different sounds we want. Like for piano, Alicia Keys is great. For guitar, Pettin House is awesome. Like these, there are numerous other libraries as well. You can check them out on their official website.   i) Alicia Keys : Official Product demonstration        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_54ERfLElI   ii) Pettin House Guitar : Unofficial Product demonstration       https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Sidechaining Compression In Cubase

Probably most of you have heard pumping DJ beats with a bass-line where the amplitude of bass-line goes down when kick punches and then again goes up like a sinusoidal wave. This is mostly used in dance tracks. We call it side-chaining compression technique, where we compress the bass-line signal according to the jump in amplitude of kick drum. How to do it ? 1. Create a drum track(Groove Agent- any patch) and draw 4 kick notes in 4/4 grid (simple beat). 2. Create a bass track from any VST plugin and draw a single note spanning over all 4/4 grid for 16 notes. You can create a melody also but that should be continuous. 3. Add a normal cubase compressor to bass-line track and click on side-chaining icon to activate side-chaining. Use the same setting given below to achieve side-chaining. 4. Go to drum track and select side-chaining track under send signal. Now play the track and you could hear that pumping bass sound. So basically you are done with basic side-chai...

Cubase Tutorial Part 1: Basics

Hi everyone, here i am starting my tutorial series with Steinberg Cubase, one of the most powerful Music Production Suite widely used across whole Music Industry. I will purposely ignore going into much details in all my tutorials unless it's a need because no one ever wants to read a user guide. So my approach would be simple : To make you learn by doing examples. However before starting that, we need to understand some basics : Understanding Cubase Interface  How to setup I/O of Cubase ? How to connect external synth[or you can say your piano] to Cubase ? Understanding Cubase Interface Cubase Interface is very simple. At the bottom there is a Transport panel which has playback controls like Play/Pause/Stop and some other controls which let the user to change Track's tempo , enable/disable Repeat Mode , start recording, enable/disable metronome, etc. On left side, we have an Inspector window where you can modify your Track's specific setting like Inserting/...

How to create a music track for a song

Most of us like to record a cover song. So we sing over karaoke track of original song. While some of you might go further and use software or plugins to remove vocal from original song. But it doesn't always work as you can still hear that vocal in the track. What vocal remover actually does is it cuts-off certain range of frequency from your track leaving behind distorted and degraded track. It is practically impossible to remove vocals without degrading the quality of your track. So now what's the solution then ? I prefer re-creating the whole music track. Because it will be a clean music without any distorting vocal. Means i try to replicate each piece of music(drums loop, starting melody, strings, pad, etc) in original song as accurately as possible. For this we need DAW(Digital Audio Workstation). In simple terms, DAW is a software used to create music and whole lot of other purposes too. Most of you might be familiar with it and most of you may not. If you aren...
